my toddler was prescribed to take erythromycin for her cough. then just this morning i went to visit my dentist for a toothache and i was told to take amoxicillin prior to a dental procedure. question, will my daughter be fine if i take amoxicillin while she’s on erythromycin?

Only a trace of most drugs gets into the milk. Amoxi is prescribed to babies all the time, and is catagory L1 for breastfeeding — as safe as it gets. I wouldn’t worry a bit about a single dose.

What other drugs affect Amoxicillin?
Before taking amoxicillin, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:
* methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall)
* probenecid (Benemid)
* a sulfa drug (such as Bactrim or Septra)
* an antibiotic such as azithromycin (Zithromax), clarithromycin (Biaxin), erythromycin (E.E.S., E-Mycin, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin), telithromycin (Ketek), or troleandomycin (Tao); or
* a tetracycline antibiotic such as demeclocycline (Declomycin), doxycycline (Adoxa, Doryx, Oracea, Vibramycin), minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin, Solodyn, Vectrin), or tetracycline (Brodspec, Panmycin, Sumycin, Tetracap)
This list is not complete and there may be other drugs that can interact with amoxicillin. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

Yes – amoxicillin is safe during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is also safe for very young infants, and will not contraindicate with the erythromycin, especially one dose. Speak to your dentist and your pharmacist if you are concerned.
I guess you’re very much aware whatever medication you’re taking may be passed to your child through breastfeeding. It’s like you child is taking amoxicillin and erythromycin at the same time. When these drugs are given together, neither has predictable therapeutic efficacy. Some say it cause a synergistic interaction (combined increased effect) or antagonism (cancel each other’s effect).
Definitely, you need to take an antibiotic for your dental infection & your child for cough. So the best thing to do is to stop breastfeeding while you’re taking the medication and until it’s out of our system. Best to talk to your daughter’s pedia & inform that you were prescribed antibiotics so he/she would determine for how long will you have to stop breastfeeding your child. Next time you’re seeing a doctor for your own condition, inform him/her ahead that you are breastfeeding.
